Rotating Columns

Client: Terrace Hill Projects Ltd
Concept: Walter Jack Studio
Detail design, engineering and installation: Springboard Design

This public art installation consists of three 9m high columns. Constructed around an inner steel frame, the columns are clad in fluted steel panels finished in coloured vitreous enamel.

While the bases remain static the rest of the columns rotate once every 8 hours to coincide with the working day and are synchronised electronically.

Because of their slow rotating speed and some very efficient gearing, the columns can be driven by very small electric motors.
