East Cliff funicular carriages

Client: Bournemouth Borough Council, in conjunction with The Arts Institute at Bournemouth

We were commissioned to redesign the carriages of the East Cliff Lift in Bournemouth, replacing the existing high maintenance Victorian ones.

Our solution provides:

• low maintenance stainless steel carriages
• vandal resistant design features
• good visibility for passengers
• easily changeable advertising panels for better revenue potential.

Working with the existing maintenance company Link Fabrication, the frame was produced in shot blast stainless steel with a laminated stainless steel & insulation foam roof and toughened glass windows.

The low level advertising panels and the toughened glass windows are easily replaceable from the inside. The roof has flexible solar panels bonded to it, providing power to floor mounted lights.
